Each installation was customized to a clients requirements, and required specialized support.  Wrote scripts in Ruby and Perl for monitoring and publishing.  Addressed SLA, security compliance, network and VPN issues.

Linux System Administrator

May 2007-March 2009


Primary system administrator for business critical Plaync.com billing website. Provided 24x7 support, trained and documented system for NOC staff. Guided programming staff while upgrading system from Modperl 1.0 to 2.0 and from unsupported Fedora 4 to CentOS/RHEL 5. Through enhancements to monitoring and documentation after hours support calls were reduced from an average of 3 per week to 1 per month.


Implemented Puppet configuration management system for Linux servers, and wrote rulesets to automatically configure CentOS 5/RHEL systems. Puppet continuously enforces system configuration to site standards making systems "self healing." New hardware provisioning and restores have been reduced from several hours to minutes.


Designed replacement game patching infrastructure, replacing 20 Windows/Apache servers with 9 Linux/Lighttpd servers. Optimized installation for high bandwidth and large file transfers and performed initial performance testing. The system served an unusually large 2GB patch to several thousand clients in its first week of activation delivering 45TB/day of data per site with zero downtime.


Led outside contractors for 250kw datacenter UPS/generator upgrade, specifying electrical changes for monitoring, and maintenance modes for equipment. Wrote operations documentation and disaster plan for equipment.


Installed and wrote log analysis jobs for Hadoop Map/Reduce pilot test.

Installed, configured and provided 24x7 support for a mid-size corporate network in a complex classified environment. Configured and managed Linux servers providing DNS, Apache/PHP, Samba, LDAP, DHCP, proxy, IDS and firewall services at our Texas and Virginia offices on both classified and public networks.


Managed Mitel SX-200 PBX systems and Asterisk PBX on Linux to connect remote offices to main office using VOIP over leased WAN links, thus consolidating local and long distance service. Setup Cisco routers, and OSPF for dynamic routing and failover. Installation costs were recouped in the first two months, with an annual savings of over $25,000.


Developed timesheet and user management web application using the Ruby on Rails framework. System tracked time, and synchronized user data and information to LDAP. Timesheets are now submitted faster by employees with less errors, while end of month processing has fallen from several hours to only a few minutes.


Deployed Nagios/Cacti network monitoring software and developed custom plugins to monitor critical web applications, PBX, and Internet services on both Linux and Windows 2000/2003. Installed Request Tracker ticketing software to automate workflow and service requests, subversion for version tracking, and phpWiki for casual documentation.


Specified, designed and installed network equipment, cabling, computer facilities and PBX systems for build out of new 10,000 sq foot and 2,500 sq foot facilities while adhering to DCID (Director Central Intelligence - Directives) security guidelines for secure facilities.

Developed custom FTP application to interface PC based source control system with legacy Unisys Mainframe environment. The application required a ground up implementation of a non-standard FTP client. The application was significantly more reliable while giving the user better feedback on the progress of the transfer.

Performed onsite installation of Laboratory Information Management System on Windows and HP-UX including installation and performance tuning of Oracle 8i server. Developed import/export system for communicating with embedded laboratory tools and the critical Scripting and Calculation subsystem.


Configured and managed the corporate Linux mail and FTP servers. Installed and maintained WAN at 4 sites including Linux firewalls, IDS, Frame Relay and Cisco routers.
